Bridges were built to connect the island of Manhattan to other boroughs.

New York City was already a center of trade, banking, and shipping. Two major changes happened in New York City in the s and early s. The first was immigration. The second big change was industrialization , when people went to work in factories for printing and making clothing.

Very tall buildings called skyscrapers were built around Manhattan. Subways underground trains and big bridges allowed people to travel from one part of the city to another. Central Park was made as a green space in the middle of a giant city, and the Empire State Building opened in The city began looking more like New York City today.

On September 11, , also known as , the buildings were attacked when two airplanes crashed into them on purpose. Almost 3, people died. New skyscrapers, a museum, and a memorial have been built where the World Trade Center stood to honor the people who lost their lives that day. Immigration and industrialization brought new people from all over the world and led to many of the changes we still see today. On September 11, , there was an attack on the World Trade Center buildings; today, a memorial, a museum and new skyscrapers stand in their place, reminding us of the strength of the most populated city in the United States.
